Because of Women Like Her…

“Oh, if I could but live another century and see the fruition of all the work for women! There is so much yet to be done.” — Susan B. Anthony

In 2020, Rochester celebrates Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which recognized women’s right to vote.

TO LEARN about our region’s contribution to the fight for equality

Once home to suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony and headquarters of the country’s leading woman suffrage organization, Rochester played a key role in the woman suffrage movement. Failure, Anthony claimed, was impossible. But Anthony was not alone in her work. Who are the lesser-known women and men who stood alongside her and who have continued to fight for women’s equality—and what stories do they have to tell?

TO REFLECT on the legacy of the women’s rights movement

The push for voting rights was a grassroots effort that took U.S. women decades to achieve. Despite facing social ridicule, hostility, and sometimes even legal consequences, suffragists persevered and ultimately triumphed. How does this epic struggle inform our understanding of women’s status in the present day and what it takes to effect meaningful change in our lives?

TO ENGAGE with one another in the work that remains to be done

In winning the right to vote, New York women took an important step towards equality. But suffrage was only one of many goals in the broader women’s rights movement. As we explore the issues that concerned women in the past, we must ask ourselves: how far have we come and how far do we still have to go in achieving true equality for everyone?
